A surprising lesson from an herb conference

When the Story No Longer Fits

Hi Reader,

They say growth happens outside your comfort zone.

And that felt very true to me last week.

I spent several days in the woods attending an herbal conference with nearly 400 women herbalists.

Now before you picture me frolicking barefoot through a field of wildflowers, you should know something important:

I don't like camping.

My husband lovingly refers to me as an "indoor cat."

I love being outside on the farm. I love growing plants. I love nature.

But sleeping in a cabin with minimal comforts?

Not exactly my idea of a relaxing getaway. 😄

So why did I go?

Because there was one class I really wanted to take.

A course on making tinctures.

I've been making tinctures for years, but I wanted to understand the process on a deeper level.

What I didn't expect was that the course would turn out to be a combination of three things:

🌿 Plant medicine
🧪 Chemistry
➗ Algebra

And somehow, it was my absolute happy place. 🤓

I was completely fascinated.

The formulas made sense.

The chemistry was interesting.

The plant medicine tied it all together.

I found myself sitting there thinking,

"I was made for this."

And then I remembered something.

I took chemistry in high school.

And I loved it.

But somewhere along the way, I had decided that I wasn't a science person.

I don't even know where that idea came from.

Maybe it was because I was good at business.

Maybe it was because finance came naturally to me.

Maybe someone told me I was one thing, and I believed them.

But for nearly 20 years, I carried around a story that wasn't actually true.

👉 "I don't like science."

Meanwhile, I was spending my free time reading nutrition books, learning about minerals, studying herbs, and attending conferences that literally combined chemistry and algebra.

Funny how that works. And it got me wondering...

How many stories do we tell ourselves that aren't actually true?

"I'm not athletic."

"I'm bad with money."

"I'm too old to learn something new."

"I'm just not that kind of person."

Maybe.

Or maybe you've simply never given yourself permission to find out.

Because sometimes growth isn't about becoming someone new.

Sometimes it's about questioning the stories you've been carrying around for years.

The ones that no longer fit.

The ones that were never really yours to begin with.

So here's my question for you this week:

👉 What story have you been telling yourself about who you are?

And more importantly...

What if it isn't true?

2026 Issue #29 Your Body Knows What It Needs Hi Reader, People often ask me why I started making tea, and my answer usually catches them off guard. Honestly... it was selfish. I didn't start making tea to open a tea business. I started making tea because I wanted to feel better. I wanted to improve my own health and the health of my family. I had pill fatigue from supplement that often seemed just as processed as the pharmaceuticals I was trying to avoid. I started paying attention to the...

2026 Issue #28 From Cornfield to Flower Garden: A Story About Growth and Transformation Hi Reader, I was walking through the U-pick flower and tea garden this week when I noticed something I'd never seen there before. A hummingbird. It hovered from flower to flower for just a few seconds before disappearing into the trees. I stood there smiling because a thought immediately crossed my mind... A few years ago this was just a cornfield. There weren't rows of flowers and herbs with beautiful...

2026 Issue #27 Every Symptom Has a Story Hi Reader, I’m always looking for new ways to help my clients get to the root cause of what’s going on in their bodies. Recently, I trained as a medical intuitive and have been impressed with the results when I use this method for my clients. One of my recent practice clients had struggled with seasonal allergies for years. Every spring his nose would start dripping, he’d feel stuffed up, and some days he didn’t even want to get out of bed. Allergy...
