The one small habit that rewires your brain to keep going

Why Celebrating Your Wins Matters

From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com

Hi Reader,

Last week I spent half a day in the garden, putzing around and planting tulip and daffodil bulbs that will (hopefully!) bring me a burst of joy come spring. 🌷

Why? Because I was celebrating a huge win… I completely rebuilt my website!

Have you ever finished a big project—not necessarily work-related, but something that took real effort? Planning a graduation party, training for a 5K, or finally tackling that closet before winter?

The real question is: how did you celebrate?

✨ Did you take yourself out to dinner?
✨ Unplug for a day?
✨ Or skip right to the next thing on your list without even pausing to acknowledge what you just pulled off?

Here’s why it matters: research shows that celebrating—even in small ways—rewires your brain to connect effort with reward. Over time, that habit builds resilience and helps you keep showing up for the bigger goals.

For me, since my love for IT is about on par with swimming with sharks 🦈, rebuilding my website was no small task. When it was done, I gave myself permission to do nothing “productive.” I wandered the farm, exhaled, and ended up planting +200 bulbs—something to remind me of my accomplishment.

So here’s my gentle challenge for you: the next time you finish something that mattered, pause and celebrate. Maybe it’s tea on the porch, a walk with your favorite playlist, or calling a friend to share the win.

Because success isn’t just about finishing the list—it’s about reminding yourself that your effort is worth celebrating.

What’s one small way you’ll celebrate your next win? 💛

2025 Issue #38 3 Fall Recipes to Try This Week From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, As expected during every harvest season, this time of year can be busy. I'm typically overbooked and my to-do list is longer at the end of the day than at the beginning of the day. Just the other night I was wrapped up in my latest project when my stomach started growling. I looked at the clock, 5:38pm. I wondered what my hubby was making for dinner, and then I remembered - I was supposed to be...

2025 Issue #37 3 simple ways to clean up what’s in your tap From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, This past weekend we packed up the farm and headed back to Illinois with boxes of Honeycrisp apples, tomatoes, and squash. 🍎🍅 It was wonderful seeing old neighbors, family, and friends again and delivering orders to them. But when I jumped in the shower, the chlorine smell hit me right away. And when my kids refilled their water bottles, my youngest wrinkled his nose and said, “Mom,...

2025 Issue #36 Why You Really Get a Cold (and How to Get Over It Faster) From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, Less than three weeks into our big transition to public school, and what happens? The sniffles hit. First, it’s a scratchy throat, then a cough, then the fever rolls in — suddenly you’ve got a full-blown cold. Both of my kids went down almost back-to-back, and of course, they looked at me like, “Mom, fix it.” Now, being both a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and an...
