It wasn’t the wine. Here’s what was actually stopping my weight loss.

The Real Reason You Can’t Lose Weight: Understanding Your Metabolic Type

From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com

Hi Reader,

I found an old journal from 2013. It was only two entries long. (Can you see where this is going?)

I'm paraphrasing but it basically went like this,

Entry #1: January 1 — “New Year, new me. I’m eating clean, I’m working out, This is going to be my year.”

Entry #2: January 2 — “My friend came over with wine and I fell straight off the wagon. I guess this isn't my year.” 🍷😆

If I could go back in time, here’s what I’d tell myself:

The wine wasn’t the problem.
Neither was the bite of ice cream, the handful of chips, or that cute little slice of dessert you pretend didn’t count because you ate it standing up. (Been there.)

If you have to be that perfect just to lose a pound…
the issue probably isn’t your willpower — it’s your metabolism.

What most people don’t realize is that your metabolic type influences:

  • how hungry you feel
  • your energy swings
  • how you gain or lose weight
  • and which foods genuinely work for your body

Most of us walk around thinking our body is working against us — when really, our metabolism is just… slow or stuck. Not personal. Not permanent.

And here’s the good part:
You can shift your metabolismonce you know what type you’re working with.

So I made something fun (and actually helpful):

👉 Take my new 2-minute quiz:
Is Your Metabolism Fast, Slow, or Stuck?
(And find out what to do next.)

No calorie counting.
No shame spirals.
Just clarity — and maybe a little relief. 💛

xo,

Nikki Leary

2026 Issue #1 How to Make this the Year You Win From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, I spent the weekend snowshoeing and sledding in below-freezing Wisconsin weather. I’ve heard mindset is important for surviving winter here… and honestly, I’m still working on that. ❄️ While I work on that, let’s talk about something I am good at: achieving goals. Statistically, most people have already given up on their New Year’s resolution by mid-January. If that’s you, this might be the...

2025 Issue #51 How to Let Go of What No Longer Serves You Before the New Year From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, We've officially reached the in-between. That quiet stretch between Christmas and New Year's where no one knows what day it is and eating chocolate before 9am somehow feels...acceptable. This is the week where big projects politely wait their turn, productivity loosens its grip, and our bodies finally get a little of the rest they've been asking for all year. And...

2025 Issue #50 What the Winter Solstice Teaches Us About Healing From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, Last night marked the winter solstice — the longest night of the year. That means that starting today, the days get a little longer. Slowly. Gently. Day by day we get more light. Winter still has a lot to say (the blowing snow and ice on my front steps make that very clear), but there’s comfort in knowing we’ve already passed the darkest point. Out here on the farm, winter...
