Hi Reader,
Years ago, before I was a nutritional therapy practitioner, I decided I probably needed a multivitamin.
Why?
Honestly, I don't remember. 😂
I probably read somewhere that taking a multivitamin was "healthy," so I went on Amazon and started looking.
At the time, I knew very little about supplements.
So how did I choose one?
I looked for the healthiest-looking label.
You know the one.
Natural colors. Plants on the bottle. Lots of impressive words on the front.
Perfect.
Add to cart.
I started taking it and not long after, I went to the bathroom and noticed something slightly alarming...
My pee was BRIGHT green.
Not maybe there's a little color to it green.
We're talking what the heck did I just put in my body? green.
So I stopped taking it.
Now, knowing what I know today, brightly colored urine can happen when your body gets rid of excess amounts of certain water-soluble vitamins, especially B vitamins.
It doesn't necessarily mean the supplement was dangerous.
But it DID make me realize something I probably should have asked before I ever swallowed that first vitamin:
Why am I taking this?
And I think that's a question a lot of us forget to ask.
...Go look at your supplement cabinet -
Seriously.
How many bottles are in there?
Magnesium because you heard it helps with sleep.
Vitamin D because someone told you everyone is low.
A probiotic you started six months ago.
Something for hormones.
Something for stress.
Something you saw on Instagram and can't even remember why you bought it.
And maybe some of those things are exactly what your body needs.
But maybe some aren't.
We can get surprisingly complacent about supplements because they're sold over the counter and often marketed as "natural."
But more isn't always better.
Nutrients work together, some supplements can interact with medications, and taking large amounts of certain nutrients when you don't need them can create problems of its own.
So here's my challenge for you this week.
Pick up every supplement you're currently taking and ask yourself:
What am I taking this for?
If you know the answer, great.
If you don't, look it up.
Then ask:
Do I still have a reason to be taking it?
Because your supplement routine shouldn't become a collection of things you've accumulated over the last five years.
It should have a purpose.
When it comes to my health, I'd rather take fewer things for the right reasons.
That's a big part of why I use Mineral Testing in my practice.
Instead of hearing "magnesium is good for stress" and automatically adding magnesium, I want more information.
A Mineral Test gives us a look at 28 minerals and important mineral ratios. I combine that information with your symptoms, diet and health history to help decide where it makes sense to focus first.
The goal isn't to give you a longer supplement list.
Quite the opposite.
I'd rather help you simplify what you're taking and understand WHY you're taking it.
And if you're staring at a cabinet full of bottles right now thinking...
"I actually have no idea why I'm taking half of these."
I'm happy to help with that, too.
We can walk through what you're currently taking and talk about what questions you may want to ask about each one. Schedule a free 15 minute call here.
And if you're ready to stop guessing and get more information about what your body may actually need, you can start with a Mineral Test.
xo,
