Why fear is sometimes your best teacher

What happened when I pushed past my comfort zone

From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com

Hi Reader,

This past weekend, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and drove to Minnesota to attend a Healing Conference.

I didn’t know a soul going in. But since growth always begins where our comfort zone ends—and because I love learning new ways to help my clients—I decided to spend the weekend with 300 other women, all gathered with one focus: healing.

The room was filled with practitioners of every kind—nurses, acupuncturists, Healing Touch practitioners, Reiki healers, herbalists, and more. Healing practices that have been helping people for thousands of years were being discussed, demonstrated, and practiced.

And you know what?
It was scary.

Halfway through one workshop, my worst fear came true. 😓

The session was on the energy fields used in Traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine to treat pain. I came prepared—pen in hand, notebook ready—to learn about meridians, mudras, and nadis.

But then the speaker said the two words that made my stomach drop:
“Partner up.”

Gulp. I didn’t know anyone. I wasn’t trained in Healing Touch. Panic set in fast.

And then, I felt a soft tap on my shoulder.
“Hi, I’m Michelle. Want to be partners?”

I blurted out an apology—telling her I wasn’t trained in Healing Touch and wasn’t sure I could even do the exercise.

She just smiled and laughed. “No worries. I’ll go first.”

Her kindness eased the knot in my stomach, and when it was my turn, I decided to try. And you know what?

It went fine. More than fine—she felt relaxed and refreshed, and I realized the fear was only in my head.

But here’s the part that really stuck with me.

As a healer, I knew that moment of panic meant something deeper was happening. So later that day, I did Reiki on myself and discovered what had been triggered: the emotion vulnerability, trapped in my body since the age of 6.

It blew me away to realize that two little words—“partner up”—had the power to pull an old emotion out of hiding. Once I cleared it, I felt lighter, freer, and so grateful for the experience.

And it made me think: if I hadn’t pushed myself outside of my comfort zone, that old wound would still be sitting there, quietly holding me back.

So this week, I want to challenge you.

Do one thing that feels a little uncomfortable—all in the name of self-growth.

And here’s the fun part: if you hit reply and tell me what you did, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a free Reiki session with me. ✨

Can’t wait to hear how you’re stretching yourself this week!

xo,

P.S. If stepping outside your comfort zone feels like a lot this week, start small—like swapping your usual drink for a healing cup of Reiki-infused tea. Sometimes the simplest shifts create the biggest changes. 🌿 Shop the teas here!

2025 Issue #38 3 Fall Recipes to Try This Week From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, As expected during every harvest season, this time of year can be busy. I'm typically overbooked and my to-do list is longer at the end of the day than at the beginning of the day. Just the other night I was wrapped up in my latest project when my stomach started growling. I looked at the clock, 5:38pm. I wondered what my hubby was making for dinner, and then I remembered - I was supposed to be...

2025 Issue #37 3 simple ways to clean up what’s in your tap From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, This past weekend we packed up the farm and headed back to Illinois with boxes of Honeycrisp apples, tomatoes, and squash. 🍎🍅 It was wonderful seeing old neighbors, family, and friends again and delivering orders to them. But when I jumped in the shower, the chlorine smell hit me right away. And when my kids refilled their water bottles, my youngest wrinkled his nose and said, “Mom,...

2025 Issue #36 Why You Really Get a Cold (and How to Get Over It Faster) From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, Less than three weeks into our big transition to public school, and what happens? The sniffles hit. First, it’s a scratchy throat, then a cough, then the fever rolls in — suddenly you’ve got a full-blown cold. Both of my kids went down almost back-to-back, and of course, they looked at me like, “Mom, fix it.” Now, being both a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and an...
