Weight Loss Struggles? Or Something Deeper?

2025 Issue #31

The night I almost ruined my weight loss progress

From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com

Hi Reader,

When I was deep in my weight loss journey, the pounds were finally coming off and I felt unstoppable—until one night changed everything.

I was sitting on the back deck in my quiet suburban neighborhood when I heard someone say my name. I turned, listening. It was my neighbor. She wasn’t talking to me, but her voice carried clear as day and she was talking about me.

She was laughing… at me. Specifically, about a recent issue I’d had with a gym owner. My heart sank as I overheard her conversation.

Even before I had time to think, I was craving a snack—something sweet and comforting from the kitchen. A hug in the form of a chocolate chip cookie.

But I stopped. I realized right there that I wasn’t hungry—I was hurt. And I was about to use food to soothe that feeling. If I kept that up, no amount of diet or exercise would fix my weight problem.

That’s the thing about emotional eating—it’s not just a “bad habit.” It’s often the root cause of sugar cravings, stalled weight loss, and feeling stuck in your body.

Is emotional eating getting in the way of your weight loss goal?

Here are 3 ways to tell if emotional eating might be running your show:

  1. You sneak food. Those quiet moments—late at night or when the house is still—and you grab “just a bite” of something without anyone knowing? It’s like losing at solitaire… no one needs to know 😉.
  2. You have a comfort food. For me, it was spaghetti with red sauce. I can still see myself calling my husband on the way home: “Cancel the chicken in the crock pot—tonight, it’s spaghetti!” It reminded me of childhood… of hugs. But here’s the truth—there are no hugs at the bottom of a plate of spaghetti.
  3. You eat when you’re bored. You’re not hungry, but you’re searching for something. What if instead of food, you tried an audiobook, a walk with the dog, or learning something new?

If you see yourself in any of these, the good news is… you can change it. Awareness is the first step. The second? Healing the root cause.

For me—and for many of my clients—that healing came through Reiki. Reiki helps release the emotions that keep you stuck, so food no longer has to be your comfort, your distraction, or your coping mechanism.

💛 This week only, I’m offering a Reiki session for $30. If emotional eating has been quietly running your life—it’s time to change the script.

2025 Issue #38 3 Fall Recipes to Try This Week From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, As expected during every harvest season, this time of year can be busy. I'm typically overbooked and my to-do list is longer at the end of the day than at the beginning of the day. Just the other night I was wrapped up in my latest project when my stomach started growling. I looked at the clock, 5:38pm. I wondered what my hubby was making for dinner, and then I remembered - I was supposed to be...

2025 Issue #37 3 simple ways to clean up what’s in your tap From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, This past weekend we packed up the farm and headed back to Illinois with boxes of Honeycrisp apples, tomatoes, and squash. 🍎🍅 It was wonderful seeing old neighbors, family, and friends again and delivering orders to them. But when I jumped in the shower, the chlorine smell hit me right away. And when my kids refilled their water bottles, my youngest wrinkled his nose and said, “Mom,...

2025 Issue #36 Why You Really Get a Cold (and How to Get Over It Faster) From: Nikki Leary I nikki@rootfornew.com Hi Reader, Less than three weeks into our big transition to public school, and what happens? The sniffles hit. First, it’s a scratchy throat, then a cough, then the fever rolls in — suddenly you’ve got a full-blown cold. Both of my kids went down almost back-to-back, and of course, they looked at me like, “Mom, fix it.” Now, being both a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and an...
