The surprising reason you're craving sugar every day

How a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner Stops Sugar Cravings

Hi Reader,

About a month ago, I noticed something interesting happening at our house.

Every night after dinner someone would ask…

“What do we have for dessert?”

At first, I didn’t think much of it.

Then I realized…

It wasn’t an occasional treat anymore.

It had quietly become an every-night expectation.

Sometimes you’re so close to a habit that you don’t even notice it’s become one.

That was me.

My first thought wasn’t, “Everyone needs more self-control.”

It was…

“I think we need to support our gut.”

If you’ve ever come to one of my digestion workshops, you’ve probably heard me talk about the gut-brain connection.

Your gut doesn’t just digest food.

It helps influence your appetite, cravings, mood, energy, and even how clearly you think.

When your gut is out of balance, your body often starts asking for the quickest source of energy it knows…

Sugar.

So instead of fighting the cravings, we decided to support the reason they might be happening.

Here’s what we changed.

🍟 We stopped snacking.

I laid down the first rule - instead of grazing all day, we ate real meals.

If someone was hungry, they were welcome to eat…

But it had to be an actual meal, not a handful of crackers or chips.

🥣We added homemade probiotic yogurt.

Every day.

I make mine using specific probiotic strains chosen to support gut health.

It’s simple to make, tastes great, and it’s become a regular part of our routine.

I’ll share the recipe below. 👇

💊 We supported our bodies a little differently.

I added a dandelion and burdock tincture to support my liver.

The rest of my family took zeolite because it fit what they needed.

One thing I always remind my clients is this:

There isn’t one supplement that’s right for everyone.

Support should match the person. 😊

🍰 We slowly replaced dessert.

We didn’t declare sugar off-limits.

Instead of reaching for ice cream or packaged cookies every night, we started putting fresh fruit on the table like a cut up watermelon or peaches.

Eventually…

Something interesting happened.

Nobody asked for dessert anymore.

It wasn’t because we were forcing ourselves not to.

We simply weren’t craving it the same way.

The result?

Within the first week I noticed my energy improving.

The brain fog started lifting.

And yes…

The scale moved a little too.

The biggest surprise wasn’t losing a few pounds.

It was realizing how quickly our “every night” dessert habit had quietly disappeared.

Sometimes the answer isn’t more willpower.

Sometimes it’s giving your body the support it’s been asking for all along.

xo,

Nikki Leary

2026 Issue #36 What My Dog’s Anxiety Taught Me About Minerals Hi Reader, Quite to my surprise, a few weeks ago, on what was already a busy Sunday, two very large Great Pyrenees came running up our driveway. My first thought? THE CHICKENS. I immediately ran outside, ready to protect the chickens and ducks from whatever adventure these two dogs had planned. Except they didn't run toward the chickens. They ran straight to me. They were friendly, tired and very clearly lost. So we brought them...

2026 Issue #35 Why healthy fats belong on your salad Hi Reader, Quick question... If you eat a big salad loaded with fresh vegetables... ...but it's covered in salad dressing... Is it still healthy? The answer might surprise you. Absolutely! In fact, adding the right kind of dressing can actually help your body absorb more of the nutrients in those vegetables. Here's why. Your body uses vitamins for hundreds of jobs every single day—from supporting your immune system and healthy vision to...

2026 Issue #34 Sometimes “moving on” isn’t the same as letting go. Hi Reader, Recently, I was working with a client who was struggling with poor circulation in his legs. During our session, I kept getting a very specific—and seemingly random—impression. “Did you ever work in construction?” I asked him. He looked surprised. Yes. He had. I told him what I was sensing: “I keep seeing your legs taking you somewhere you didn't want to go. You went because you had to, but your heart wasn't in it....
