Can we stop blaming food?

2026 Issue #30

Here's what I look for first when a client can't lose weight.

Hi Reader,

Before I became a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, I would have told you I was the queen of dieting...

...because I was always on a diet.

Back when I was a size 14, there were certain foods I had completely written off.

Mayonnaise.

Bacon.

Donuts. 😭

If someone had told me I'd someday be making my own mayonnaise, enjoying bacon without guilt, and even eating the occasional donut, I would've laughed.

(Check out my mayo recipe at the end!)

So what changed?

Did those foods suddenly become healthy?

No.

I learned that weight loss isn't about finding the one food that's making you gain weight.

When a woman comes to me frustrated because she can't lose weight, I'm not looking to see if she's eating mayonnaise.

I'm looking at the bigger picture.

How does she eat most days?

Is she sleeping well?

How stressed is she?

Are her hormones working with her or against her?

Is she nourishing her body?

What's her relationship with food?

Those are the things that move the needle.

That's why I cringe a little when I hear some of the weight-loss plans women put themselves through.

❌ Cut out carbs.

❌ Spend two hours a day at the gym.

❌ Meal prep 27 containers every Sunday.

❌ Start over every Monday after "one last weekend."

It doesn't have to be that hard.

When I want to lose a few pounds, I don't reinvent my life.

I go back to the basics.

🥗 Look for the easiest win.

Instead of changing everything, I ask myself, "What's one habit that's probably holding me back?"

Maybe it's the bowl of ice cream every night.

Maybe it's that I stopped taking my dog on walks in the morning.

Maybe it's the handful of snacks that somehow turn into a meal instead of actually sitting down and eating a meal.

Small changes, repeated consistently, almost always beat one week of perfection.

📅 Don't wait until Monday.

I always laugh when someone tells me they're starting Monday.

Because what usually happens between now and Monday?

Pizza.

Ice cream.

"I better eat it now because I can't have it next week."

Sound familiar?

Instead, start with your next meal.

One healthy choice today is better than the perfect plan that never starts.

⚖️ Stop giving the scale so much power.

Your weight is going to fluctuate whether you look at it or not.

Instead of weighing yourself every morning, try picking one day each week.

Then spend the rest of the week noticing the wins that don't show up on the scale.

✨ You have more energy.

✨ Your jeans fit a little better.

✨ Your joints don't ache as much.

✨ You're sleeping through the night.

✨ Your brain fog is lifting.

Those are all signs your body is moving in the right direction.

The scale usually catches up eventually.

I've learned that lasting health isn't about finding the "perfect" diet.

It's about building habits you actually enjoy enough to keep doing.

Because the best diet isn't the one that works for two weeks...

It's the one still gives you results, even years from now.

And as a random soapbox moment, let's not hate on mayonnaise, let's just start making our own at home.

It takes less than two minutes, tastes so much better than store-bought, and you get to control exactly what goes into it.

xo,

Nikki Leary

2026 Issue #29 Your Body Knows What It Needs Hi Reader, People often ask me why I started making tea, and my answer usually catches them off guard. Honestly... it was selfish. I didn't start making tea to open a tea business. I started making tea because I wanted to feel better. I wanted to improve my own health and the health of my family. I had pill fatigue from supplement that often seemed just as processed as the pharmaceuticals I was trying to avoid. I started paying attention to the...

2026 Issue #28 From Cornfield to Flower Garden: A Story About Growth and Transformation Hi Reader, I was walking through the U-pick flower and tea garden this week when I noticed something I'd never seen there before. A hummingbird. It hovered from flower to flower for just a few seconds before disappearing into the trees. I stood there smiling because a thought immediately crossed my mind... A few years ago this was just a cornfield. There weren't rows of flowers and herbs with beautiful...

2026 Issue #27 Every Symptom Has a Story Hi Reader, I’m always looking for new ways to help my clients get to the root cause of what’s going on in their bodies. Recently, I trained as a medical intuitive and have been impressed with the results when I use this method for my clients. One of my recent practice clients had struggled with seasonal allergies for years. Every spring his nose would start dripping, he’d feel stuffed up, and some days he didn’t even want to get out of bed. Allergy...
