3 weight-loss myths I had to unlearn

Three weight-loss myths you can finally stop believing

Hi Reader,

I felt like a diet expert loooong before I ever became a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner!

After years of dieting, I honestly thought I'd tried it all.

Low-fat.

Low-calorie.

Fat-free.

Counting points.

Eating every two hours.

Starting every Monday. 🙃

When I finally learned the things that helped me go from a size 14 to a size 4—and more importantly, maintain it—I realized I had to unlearn a lot of what I grew up believing.

Some of the biggest weight-loss advice we've been given simply isn't true.

Here are my top three myths that are worth letting go of if you want to lose weight without feeling like you're constantly on a diet.

🚫 Myth #1: Calories in, calories out is all that matters.

Remember SnackWell's cookies?

They were practically marketed as diet food because they were low-fat and lower in calories.

People stocked their pantries with them thinking they were making a healthy choice.

But how many people actually lost weight eating SnackWell's?

Exactly.

Your body isn't a calculator.

Calories matter, but so do hormones, nutrient density, blood sugar balance, protein, sleep, stress, and gut health.

A 200-calorie donut and a 200-calorie omelet may have the same calories...

But your body responds to them very differently.

🚫 Myth #2: You have to cut out your favorite foods.

For years, mayonnaise, bacon, and donuts were on my "never eat" list.

Today?

I make my own mayonnaise, enjoy bacon without guilt, and even have the occasional donut.

The goal isn't to never eat the foods you love.

The goal is to build a way of eating that's nourishing most of the time while still leaving room for life.

Because if your plan only works until someone's birthday...

It's probably not going to work long-term.

🚫 Myth #3: The harder you work, the more weight you'll lose.

I used to think if I wasn't exhausted after a workout, it didn't count.

I now know that more isn't always better.

Your body needs movement...

But it also needs recovery.

It needs sleep.

It needs minerals.

It needs enough food to actually fuel your metabolism.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do isn't another workout.

Sometimes it's making dinner, going for a walk, and getting to bed an hour earlier.

That's the kind of health that lasts.

2026 Issue #36 What My Dog’s Anxiety Taught Me About Minerals Hi Reader, Quite to my surprise, a few weeks ago, on what was already a busy Sunday, two very large Great Pyrenees came running up our driveway. My first thought? THE CHICKENS. I immediately ran outside, ready to protect the chickens and ducks from whatever adventure these two dogs had planned. Except they didn't run toward the chickens. They ran straight to me. They were friendly, tired and very clearly lost. So we brought them...

Hand pouring olive oil onto a fresh salad.

2026 Issue #35 Why healthy fats belong on your salad Hi Reader, Quick question... If you eat a big salad loaded with fresh vegetables... ...but it's covered in salad dressing... Is it still healthy? The answer might surprise you. Absolutely! In fact, adding the right kind of dressing can actually help your body absorb more of the nutrients in those vegetables. Here's why. Your body uses vitamins for hundreds of jobs every single day—from supporting your immune system and healthy vision to...

2026 Issue #34 Sometimes “moving on” isn’t the same as letting go. Hi Reader, Recently, I was working with a client who was struggling with poor circulation in his legs. During our session, I kept getting a very specific—and seemingly random—impression. “Did you ever work in construction?” I asked him. He looked surprised. Yes. He had. I told him what I was sensing: “I keep seeing your legs taking you somewhere you didn't want to go. You went because you had to, but your heart wasn't in it....
